1979

Transistor radio pressed to my ear against my bed’s pillow. WABC AM tuned in. “Don’t stop till you get enough” and “I want to rock with you” in heavy rotation. I’m a struggling 7th grade drummer trying to find the beat. It occurs to me during these blind pillow sessions that you can actually see the beat. It’s an amazing vision. I still can see it to this day at certain times.
It didn’t happen over night. It took some Stones covers, some Beatles vamping, and some Led Zep jamming to finally get it. But the one long and lonely strand of rhythm DNA was born on those radio nights and slinked through me to transform 2/4 beats into 1234 celebrations.
Then came “Beat it.” The visibile beat reborn like a throbbing strobe. And that DNA found its way to the way I play.
And that’s just about Farrah.

Friends by numbers

Never have I been so entrenched in a totally gay ritual as I was today.
Had a kind of half day at work—we do this summer Friday kind of thing to get a jump on getting wasted and sunburned on the weekend. I spent my afternoon at the Apple store getting my new 3GS.
The store is a 10-minute walk from my office in SoHo. I reserved my snazzy new phone last week so as to be guaranteed a place in this slowly moving parade. I stood in a line. Me. I never stand in lines. I cut. I bribe. I sneak in through back doors. Today I stood in line. Maybe it was because I just had a xanax prescription refilled and was totally chilled.
The Apple replecants guiding the line said a 25-minute wait, tops. I was inside within 5. I pretended to be a hander outer of the free bottled water they were giving out and then slipped the “bouncer” a $20.
Sweet!
The let me into the store and, as they do for each group of 5-10 people they let in exclusively for the new 3GS, the staff starts clapping for us. This is where the Apple shows its peach. Total va-ja-ja, as if we’re all sharing our period at the same time. Which, if you think about it, isn’t so different from the Apple product cycle. Isn’t that cool!?
No.
Men with braces slinking up to me to reveal the sensuality of the new iPhone is not—in my humble opinion—exactly a lap dance.
Give me my goddamn phone and don’t junk up the trunk with people clapping when they could be translating the 300 contacts from my old— which turned out to be untranslatable— piece of shit Verizon phone.
Now I have to configure SIM cards, nudge a new W-Fi network and figure out a way to hook up in the future. I’ve lost all my numbers. This is tragic. I’ve lost Roxanne’s number. JJ’s #, even though that’s probably a gain more than a loss.
I’ve lost valuable and forward thinking digits. All for the most ultimate piece of techno one can palm.
Is it worth it? I guess we’ll see. Who would ever once have thought a new phone could seismically alter a languishing social life?
Me.

Old post from 2007 about Roxanne

I spoke with a good friend last night.
We were supposed to go out, get bombed, and see the Rockefeller Center Tree. Just for shits and giggles. But we were both toast after this week. So we postponed.
She is uneasy about taking a promotion because she is happy with what she is currently doing.
She said she was happy. I said, in many more words, What? You’re happy? No one is happy.
But I encouraged her to not only move forward, but to aggressively negotiate for more compensation.
She should. She is incredibly talented, possessing an eye for design that few have.
Few regret moving forward.
I’ve seen her apartment. For a small place, it looms large. She has a uniquely creative esthetic, one that is enviable. I’ve seen her publication. Her part rocks, she should have more influence over the final output. She is a beaming diamond among dusty tumbleweeds. She is beautiful, smart as a whip, and funny.
She should take the promotion, because it’s easy to muse, then wonder about retreating. But she should go forward, with determination, first.
She is not just someone who is good at her job. She is talented. Gifted, even. The kind of talent that makes the masses happy.
It felt good talking to her. I wonder how she felt talking to me.

Foxy Roxy

Where is Roxanne when I want her? Last time I saw her I had wisdom teeth removed and my lips were numb. That was an infamous date.
This is not her. But she looks this good.

Bringing (lame ass) sexy back to SoHo
Sexy Back lyrics
[Verse 1]
I'm bringing sexy back
Them other boys don't know how to act
I think it's special what's behind your back
So turn around and i'll pick up the slack.
Take em' to the bridge
[Bridge]
Dirty babe
You see these shackles
Baby I'm your slave
I'll let you whip me if I misbehave
It's just that no one makes me feel this way
Take em' to the chorus
[Chorus]
Come here girl
Go ahead, be gone with it
Come to the back
Go ahead, be gone with it
VIP
Go ahead, be gone with it
Drinks on me
Go ahead, be gone with it
Let me see what you're working with
Go ahead, be gone with it
Look at those hips
Go ahead, be gone with it
You make me smile
Go ahead, be gone with it
Go ahead child
Go ahead, be gone with it
And get your sexy on
Go ahead, be gone with it
Get your sexy on
Go ahead, be gone with it
[X6]
Get your sexy on
[Verse 2]
I'm bringing sexy back
Them other boys don't know how to act
Come let me make up for the things you lack
Cause your burning up I gotta get it fast
Take em' to the bridge
[Bridge]
[Chorus]
[Verse 3]
I'm bringing sexy back
Them other boys watch while I attack
If that's your girl you better watch your back
Cause she'll burn it up for me and that's a fact
Take em' to the chorus
[Chorus]

Incredibly aware, can’t swear that I care for J is gone and I can’t bear to say that I’m again ready to dare. Who cares? I don’t anymore.
I'm walking away from this one.
