I can see you, shining in the sun...

Hit the beach today. The water seemed warmer than the air. Spent 5 hours paddling waiting for what ended up being 3 good waves. Blew out from under on two of them (my lack of practice is showing) but took a high header 40 yards from crest to beach. Got a couple of high fives, then a scolding from a lifeguard-ess who wasn’t too enamored by the way I curled into tourist territory. Once she recognized me, she laughed. We were once something. WAY back when.
My shoulders are killing me. Muscles busting out of skin. Can’t tell if it’s the paddling or the weight of the past.

The boys of summer
Nobody on the road
Nobody on the beach
I feel it in the air
The summers out of reach
Empty lake,
Empty streets
The sun goes down alone
Im drivin by your house
Though I know youre not home
But I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin in the sun
You got your hair combed back and your
Sunglasses on, baby
And I can tell you my love for you
Will still be strong after the boys of
Summer have gone
I never will forget those nights
I wonder if it was a dream
Remember how you made me crazy?
Remember how I made you scream?
Now I dont understand whats happened
To our love,
But babe, Im gonna get you back
Im gonna show you what Im made of
I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin in the sun
I see you walkin real slow and youre smilin at everyone
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone
Out on the road today I saw a deadhead sticker
On a cadillac
A little voice inside my head said, ----dont
Look back. you can never look back---.
I thought I knew what love was,
What did I know?
Those days are gone forever
I should just let them go but-
I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin in the sun
You got that top pulled down and that radio on baby
And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone
I can see you-
Your brown skin shining in the sun
You got that hair slicked back and
Those wayfarers on, baby
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone
{Great song, huh.}
Classic, dreamy angst. Redemption, confession and adoration. But, unfortunately, possession. Which, like a traveler boarding a flight, is ultimately something to carry and stow only to forget until you hit the ground. One of my all time faves, A: For the writer of the song being a drummer and singer, like I once was; and B: For the writer of the song noticing the nuance of human nature like I try to do every fucking day.
Plus, it’s really catchy, tune-wise. I can only hit that high C after a long train ride, some lemon tea with honey, or a shot of black sambuka.
Ultimately, an allegory set to music that hits close to home for way too many.
Question for the ages: why are so many so heartbroken?
